GOVERNOR HENRY SAYS MARCH IS “CALL OKIE BEFORE YOU DIG” MONTH

One call can save lives and property, call 1-800-522-OKIE before you dig

Oklahoma City, Okla. (March 1, 2006)--Governor Brad Henry showed his support for damage prevention by signing a proclamation that declared March as “Call Okie Before You Dig” month. Labor Commissioner Brenda Reneau issued a  Commissioner’s Citation to show her support of Oklahoma One-Call’s commitment to promoting safety awareness to the general public.

Damage prevention is important for homeowners, farmers and contractors alike. Careless digging interrupts vital services, creates environmental damage or even cause injury or death. One simple call can prevent these from happening. It is easy to Call OKIE, dial 1-800-522-6543, 48 hours before you plan to dig and tell the Customer Service Representative you would like to have the lines in your area marked. Owners of the underground facilities will mark their lines within 48 hours.  After the lines are marked, you should see where they are and if it is safe to dig. The phone call and service are free.

Oklahoma One Call System Inc was formed in 1979 to prevent damage to underground facilities such as gas lines, communication cables, electric lines, sewer and water lines below the surface.  Call Okie began with just 27 member companies and now has over 950. In a single year, Call Okie received over half a million inbound calls resulting in three and a half million outbound messages.  More information on Oklahoma One-Call is available at www.callokie.com.
